This Chainsaw 2.2 distribution of Empire is specifically targetted to the Linux operating system. All Linux-specific modifications to source code (and there are not many) are enclosed within #ifdefs, so the source should be usable on any supported system just by modifying makefiles. If you wish to play the game but don't have a compiler or are not interested in customizing the game features, the binary distribution contains all you need to run the game. Pick the world size you want and download the appropriate binary package along with the info package. The binaries and info files are archived using absolute pathnames due to the fact they are not moveable without recompilation (or symbolic links). The game resides in /usr/games/lib/empire. The binary distribution consists of the following files: empire-bin??X??.tar.Z - executables compiled for given world size empire.doc.tar.Z - general game documentation, optional empire.info.tar.Z - formatted help files for the game, required The source distribution consists of the following files: empire.src.tar.Z - source code for game and related utilities, also contains unformatted info source, and general game documentation. Binaries were compiled using gcc2.2.2d, dynamically linked to the 4.1 libraries. Kernel used was 0.98.pl1. Further information, including game setup instructions, is included in the empire-bin??X??.tar.Z archive. If you have problems with this distribution, please contact me via email.
