Graphics Posted by Hemos on Saturday October 30, @11:03AM EDT
from the visit-with-the-people-who-make-my-desktop-possible dept.
ranc0r writes "The staff of PROPAGANDA will be holding and IRC party on irc.openprojects.net #propaganda today at 3PM CST to celebrate the sucess of the website, which has served over 250,000+ visitors seamless tiles for their X11 desktop. Also, Bowie Poag will be turning over the site to Asmodean of Revelation fame. Come wish Bowie good luck on his upcoming projects and tell Asmodean what you would like to see in the future. GRASS Geographic Information System now under GPL
GNU is Not Unix Posted by Hemos on Saturday October 30, @10:56AM EDT
from the i-still-don't-know-where-i-am dept.
Spatialy Challenged writes "The GRASS Geographic Information System (originally developed by the US Army Corps of Engineers) is actively being developed and has now been released under the GPL. GRASS has a good core architecture, but is missing the interoperability and GUI features of commercial desktop GIS. I would sure like to see this software evolve into a KDE/Gnome GUI plus OpenGIS CORBA/SQL/COM interoperability. I'm sure it has the potential to blow the socks off of the big commercial names. "

Two Spammers Murdered in New Jersey
Spam Posted by Roblimo on Saturday October 30, @09:10AM EDT
from the cautionary-tales dept.
Zerbey wrote in with a CNN report about the excution-style murder of two shady online stock promoters whose primary marketing device was ... spam. Zerbey wrote, hopefully with tongue in cheek, that they may have been slain "by a disgruntled recipient of UCE who decided that e-mailing abuse@ simply wasn't effective enough." Farfetched? Perhaps. A quote from the story: "Though investigators have not pinpointed a motive or suspects, Monmouth County Prosecutor John Kaye said the attack likely was at least partly tied to the pair's penny stock Web operation, www.stockinvestor.com, or other ventures."

Creative Labs to open SB Live Drivers
Hardware Posted by Hemos on Saturday October 30, @06:53AM EDT
from the good-sound-for-everyone dept.
Several people wrote to us to let us know that Creative Labs has decided to make the drivers for their Soundblaster Live open source. They made the announcement and also said they will be setting up a CVS/Bugzilla system to aid in development. Jon Taylor, of S3 and nVidia fame, along with several other coders have been asked to oversee the development. Additionally, they confirmed that they are working with Lokisoft to work Environmental Audio and "3D Audio" on the Linux platform. Lokisoft makes most of the uber-cool games for Linux.

World's Fastest Supercomputer to be Linux
Silicon Graphics Posted by Hemos on Saturday October 30, @04:09AM EDT
from the cray-and-sgi-having-fun dept.
xinit was one of the people who pointed us to the CNET story running about the possibility that a current bid by SGI for a supercomputer could be run on Linux. The supercomputer could be the fastest in the world at time of its production. SGI has confirmed the bid, saying it's being targeted for 2001, if the bid is accepted. The placement would be Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Salon Writes on The Troubles with "Trek"
Movies Posted by Hemos on Friday October 29, @10:14PM EDT
from the the-end-of-an-era dept.
Splatta was the first to write with us with article currently running on Salon about the possible end of the Star Trek "idea". The story is well researched with commentary from Paramount, Leonard Nimoy and others about what's happened to the Star Trek story over the last several years and "the indignites of age". Is it the end of Trek? What do you think? Is the franchise dying?

Great Small Business Idea for Linux
The Almighty Buck Posted by Roblimo on Friday October 29, @05:45PM EDT
from the little-guys-deserve-some-gravy-too dept.
Anonymous Coward writes "VARBusiness has an article about how Tom Adelstein's Bynari, Inc. is using Linux as the basis of a whole new business model for his Dallas integration firm. In it he talks about the value of call centers and partnerships within the Open Source community. Click here for the full interview. " Everyone who dreams of owning their own Linux-based small busines, but doesn't have a lot of capital, must read this story. You don't have to follow the interviewee's business model, but he's sure got one thing right: The demand for Linux systems integrators and VARs is going to grow like mad!

Open Source: Who Are Those Guys?
Linux Posted by Roblimo on Friday October 29, @03:43PM EDT
from the no-hippie-punks-in-this-crowd dept.
dfay writes "An interesting article on ZDNet about who makes up the Open Source Movement. Of course, you have to accept the premise that all OSS programmers are tracked in the LSM. Still, I think the overall tone of the piece suggests that OSS developers can be taken at least as seriously as those in the 'industry'." Actually, the article mentions that lots of developers' work, including kernel hacks, don't show up in Linux Software Maps [LSMs]. Still good stuff.

The Porn - MP3 Connection
It's funny. Laugh. Posted by Hemos on Friday October 29, @01:59PM EDT
from the the-rainbow-connection dept.
quadra writes "New Musical Express has a strange article based on a report by the British Phonographic Industry. According to them, sites are using MP3s in order to 'force' users to watch porn. " For those who aren't familar, the BPI is the British-equivalent of the RIAA[?]. Wow. I can't even imagine the thought process that leads people to say things like that.
