************************************************************************ DDN Announcement: 9501 DISA DDN Defense Communications System 23 January 1995 Published by: DDN Network Info Center (NIC@NIC.DDN.MIL) (800) 365-3642 DEFENSE DATA NETWORK ANNOUNCEMENT DDN announcements are distributed online by the DDN Network Information Center under DISA contract as a means of communicating official policy, procedures and other information of concern to management personnel at DDN facilities. Back issues may be read through the TACNEWS server ("@n" command at the TAC) or may be obtained by FTP (or Kermit) from the NIC.DDN.MIL host [192.112.36.5] using login="anonymous" and password="guest". The pathname for announcements is ddn-news/ddn-announce-nn.txt (where "nn" is the bulletin number). ************************************************************************ DISN DIAL-IN SERVICE PILOT IMPLEMENTATION 1. The Defense Information System Agency (DISA) will be providing a pilot implementation of the future DISN (NIPRNET and SIPRNET) dial-in service. This pilot installation will provide the future subscribers a chance to familiarize themselves with the DISN dial- in service and allow them to develop a terminal configuration best suited for using this service. The pilot installation will be activated on 23 Jan 95 and will stay active until the establishment of the service on the DISN router networks. 2. The Communication Server will be located at the Center For System Engineering (CFSE) in the Parkridge III building in Reston, VA. Since this is a Commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) product and not built to be an exact replica of the present-day DDN TACs there will be differences in the operational procedures. In addition, the new service will provide added features such as the SLIP and PPP protocols. DDN and DISN Data Services subscribers who plan on utilizing these features can test new implementations on the pilot installation. 3. Customers wishing to participate in this pilot program must first register to use the pilot installation. Present DDN TAC users who will transition to the NIPRNET can have their User IDs and Access Codes, as specified on their DDN TAC Access Cards, honored by the pilot installation. A potential NIPRNET user without a DDN TAC Access Card can obtain one through normal channels by contacting his/her host administrator. The situation is somewhat different for potential SIPRNET users since they do not presently possess DDN TAC Access Cards. These individuals will be issued guest accounts from their DISA Customer Service Representatives for use on the pilot installation. 4. A copy of the Pilot Installation User Guide can be obtained electronically by anonymous FTP from NIC.DDN.MIL, 192.112.36.5, using the "guest" password. The file, cs-pilot-ug.txt, is located in the netinfo sub-directory. The User Guide can also be obtained by sending an e-mail message to SERVICE@NIC.DDN.MIL with NETINFO CS-PILOT-UG-TXT in the subject line. This document will provide information on how to register and use the pilot service. 5. For further information on this matter call the NIC at 1-800- 365-3642. POC for this DDN Announcement is Maj Theresa Orihuela, DISA Code WE3351, DSN 364-8355/ Comm (703)487-8355.
