"Lawyers need to research cases and law, extract information from documents, add information and typeset briefs. There was no appropriate system for doing that," [said Charles Goldfarb, creator of SGML].... Michael Cockrill, a program manager in the word-processing business unit at Redmond, Wash.'s Microsoft, said the company is creating SGML conversion software to work with Word. "We're building it in response to customers," he said. "There's a critical mass of people who demand a SGML solution." Cockrill said it makes more economic sense for a large corporation or law firm to invest the money in transferring files to SGML, but that size isn't the determining factor. "The need for SGML depends more on the volume of information rather than the number of people," he said. "There are likely to be four-person firms that generate enough volume of paper." San Francisco Daily Journal "Ex-Practitioner Started Speaking New Language; Others Listened" James Evans 24 June 1993 EUROPEAN VENDORS OF SGML APPS ============================= For those of you interested in reading what some international vendors are doing with SGML, the 28 June 1993 issue of Seybold Report on Publishing Systems has extensive coverage of European SGML tools.
