"SoftQuad HoTMetaL is now available for users of Windows." Three weeks ago, SoftQuad made available a workstation version of HoTMetaL for Sun computers. It has been downloaded by people at over 6000 sites in 17 countries already. "Enthusiasm for the Windows version will be equally high," said Rubinsky. "Creators of information can't afford to get bogged down. They need simple, enduring tools that take care of the complications." Commercial and educational publishers are beginning to use the World Wide Web -- a network of computers circling the globe -- as a way to rapidly and inexpensively reach out to large audiences, both global and internal. They have begun using HoTMetaL to edit their existing documents and create new ones. They use already available tools, such as the Mosaic browsing software available from the US National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) to give their readers access to a collection of electronic publications ranging from NASA's photographs of Mars to exhibits at the Vatican Library. SoftQuad has established a formal collaborative relationship with the NCSA, and the two organizations' software products are integrated to allow ease of inter-operation. The newest Mosaic software includes a command to edit a copy of the document being viewed and HoTMetaL includes Mosaic viewing capabilities for its files. Unlike the Unix version, which was distributed exclusively over the Internet, HoTMetaL for Windows will also be available through the commercial Delphi network, as part of the offerings of its Internet special interest group. SoftQuad and Prentice Hall PTR, publishers, have announced that HoTMetaL will be included with "The NCSA Mosaic Handbook" by Amy Kreiling and Frank Baker. The Handbook, to be published in December, 1994 is a comprehensive guide to creating Mosaic documents and using and administering the Mosaic software. What makes it possible for the World Wide Web to offer hyperlinked text, movies, and pictures is that all documents are in a single file format called HTML (HyperText Markup Language), which is based on the Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML), the International Standard for information interchange. SoftQuad is the world's leading vendor of software tools based on SGML, delivering software and services offering multi-platform, standards-based solutions for information management and electronic publishing. SoftQuad Inc. is a subsidiary of SoftQuad International Inc., a publicly traded company listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange (Symbol SKI). Pricing and Availability: SoftQuad HoTMetaL for Windows is free, unsupported software now available from many of the same Internet sites and electronic bulletin boards as Mosaic, as well as the Delphi network. Current releases are for Sun Motif and Microsoft Windows. Macintosh and Hewlett Packard HP-UX versions will follow soon. SoftQuad HoTMetaL PRO is a fully supported commercial version with additional functionality that will allow users to handle more complex document structures. For example, it provides WYSIWYG editing of complex tables and offers spell-checking, multi-page HTML printing, user-defined macros and long or short sets of menus. It will be available from SoftQuad and its resellers by the end of July 1994 on Sun Motif and Microsoft Windows for a list price of US$195.00 with a 90 day promotional price of US$149.00. SoftQuad will also offer the HoTMetaL PRO product for sale over the Internet.
