AGENDA: FIRST DAY Who needs topic maps? The infoglut problem Management and interchange of semantics Building and customizing information networks Enabling multiple views of heterogeneous information objects Long-term information management issues Conceptual introduction Structured representation of knowledge bases Application to interoperable electronic indexes, glossaries, tables of contents and thesauri Virtual trees versus hard-coded trees Relationship to database schema modeling HyTime Foundations Relationship between SGML, HyTime and DSSSL The concept of the SGML Architectural Form Quick overview of the HyTime modules HyTime Hyperlinks The difference between linking and addressing The independent link description Aggregate location and linking Presentation of the Nameloc, Nmlist, and Ilink architectural forms Practical example of HyTime hyperlinks. SECOND DAY The Conventions for the Application of HyTime working group (CApH) An ongoing document architecture design activity Origin of the work on Topic Navigation Other CApH Modules The Topic Map Architecture The Semantic Assignment architectural form The Topic Relation architectural form Representing of indexes, glossaries, and thesauri with topic maps Current state of the CApH work on Topic Maps Methodology for building Topic Maps Topic creation and typing Occurrence roles Retrieval of extra information Relationships between topics Examples of Topic Navigation Simple topic maps Virtual tables of contents Methods for Topic Map creation and editing Navigation with Topic Maps Comparison to HTML The EnLIGHTeN Implementation of a Topic Map Browser Design principles HyTime engine programming Possible extensions Customization Topic Maps and Databases: First results Populating a relational database from a Topic Map SQL queries and updating Topic Map instance Towards the integration of various information sources, including database schemas and ordinary SGML documents ------------------------------------------------------ SUMMARY The Topic Map Navigation is an SGML/HyTime-derived architecture. It is the first application that provides user-defined semantics and supports multiple document navigation. Users can create and maintain consistent electronic indexes, glossaries, thesauri, and tables of contents for multiple heterogeneous documents. Potential uses are: - highly enriched technical documentation - web management - database publishing - library cataloging This workshop is aimed at users who need to manage a web of documents and want to master the evolution and the meaning of the links for documents that are constantly evolving and enriched. During this workshop, we will also present a transformation between Topic Maps and relational database schemas being done at the Oregon Graduate Institute that represents a first step towards integrating various information sources that include database schemas and ordinary SGML documents. ------------------------------------------------------ INSTRUCTORS Dr. Catherine Hamon does research and development at High Text. She has played a major role in the development of EnLIGHTeN, a Topic Map browser application. Prior to joining High Text, Dr. Hamon studied interoperability issues among heterogeneous databases, as part of a post-doctoral program at Stanford University. Her research interests include object-oriented databases, database design methodologies, SGML applications, and the management of distributed heterogeneous information. Dr. Michel Biezunski is the director of High Text, SARL, a company specializing on electronic document engineering with emphasis on SGML/HyTime applications. There are three main activities at High Text: teaching, consulting for HyTime-based document architectures, and consulting for application development. Michel has organized and thought HyTime Workshops since 1992. He participates to the ISO/IEC WG8 standardization activities, is a member of the "Conventions for the Application of HyTime," and is chair of the SGML Users' Group France. Radhika Reddy is a third year Ph.D. student at Oregon Graduate Institute of Science and Technology. She is working on issues related to retrieval of data from federated database systems. She has a Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) degree from Birla Institute of Technology, India. Her research interests include interoperability between federated information sources, data modeling, and object-oriented database systems. ------------------------------------------------------ Date: February 26 and 27, 1996 Time: 9 am-5 pm Location: Santa Clara, California Cost: $1,000 per person (total cost for two days including food) To register contact Susan Ryan at: Martin Hensel Corporation 233 Needham Street Newton, MA 02164 (617) 527-3230 (617) 965-3006 (fax) sryan@hensel.com ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ++++TOPIC MAP NAVIGATION WORKSHOP++++ ++++REGISTRATION FORM++++ Name:_________________________________________________ Address:______________________________________________ City, State, Zip:_____________________________________ Phone Number:_______________________________ Fax Number:_________________________________ Email address:______________________________ Payment Method: __Check or Money Order (Please make checks or money orders out to Martin Hensel Corp.) __Charge __Master Card __Visa __American Express Card Number:_______________________________ Expiration Date:______________ ++++DEADLINE FOR REGISTRATION IS++++ ++++FEBRUARY 16, 1996++++ ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ////\\\\////\\\\///\\\///\\\\////\\\\///\\\\///\\\\///\ \ / / SGML NEWSWIRE LIST MANAGER \ \ Sue Martin-Gamble, Interleaf / \ 4999 Pearl East Circle, Ste 100 \ / Boulder, Colorado 80301 / \ VOX 303/449-5032 x 109 \ / FAX 303/449-3246 / \ sue@avalanche.com \ / / ////\/\/\/\/\//////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\////\\\\//\\\\\/
