Management Document Production Instructions affect the
management of the document production process. The presentation
parameters which are affected by the Management Document
Production Instructions defined by this International Standard,
and the aspect of document presentation which is affected by
each of them is shown in The Colorant Set Document Production Instruction identifies a
set of physical colorants to be used during the presentation of
the SPDL document. Physical colorants used to render the
document are distinct from primaries in Color Space Resource
Specifications. Specifically, there is no direct relationship
between primaries specified in a Color Space Resource
Specification and physical colorants, and the mapping of color
specifications to device output is device dependent.
A colorant set can be specified by a colorant set name or by
a set of individual colorant specifications. The way in which a
system selects a physical colorant set is system dependent. Systems
may in fact select a single default colorant set for any
Colorant Set Document Production Instruction.
The Colorant Set Document Production Instruction is
represented by a COLORANT SET DPI structure element.
A COLORANT SET DPI structure element shall be a
composite structure element which shall have the following
immediate subordinates:
The immediate subordinates shall occur in the specified
order.
A COLORANT SET MESSAGE structure element shall be
a base structure element. The value of
a COLORANT SET MESSAGE structure element shall be of
type The COLORANT SET MESSAGE specifies a message which
may describe the specified colorant set, the suggested fallback
action, or provide other information. It is intended that this
message be delivered to an operator prior to and as close as
possible to the printing of the document.
A COLORANT SET SPECIFICATION structure element
shall be either:
A COLORANT SET IDENTIFIER structure element shall
be a base structure element. The value of
the COLORANT SET IDENTIFIER structure element shall
be of type A COLORANT SET DESCRIPTION structure element shall
be a composite structure element which shall have the following
immediate subordinates:

shall be of type The value of a COLORANT SET CLASS IDENTIFIER
structure element shall identify the class of the colorant set.
A COLORANT IDENTIFIER structure element shall be a

type The value of each COLORANT IDENTIFIER structure
element shall identify one of the colorants in the colorant set.
There are no Public Object Identifier values
for COLORANT IDENTIFIER structure elements defined by
this International Standard.
The effect of the Colorant Set Document Production
Instruction shall be to set the value of the
The Colorant Set Document Production Instruction is
meaningful in any PAGE or PAGESET, or in
Supplementary DPI. Any Colorant Set Document
Production Instruction in the PROLOGUE of
a PICTURE which is not a PAGE shall be
ignored. If Colorant Set Document Production Instructions occur
in multiple PAGEs or PAGESETs within a
document, the Colorant Set Document Production Instruction in
the subordinate BLOCK shall take precedence for its
scope. If Colorant Set Document Production Instructions occur in
Supplementary DPI and Document DPI, the
Supplementary DPI shall take precedence over the
Document DPI.
Since the method of assigning a colorant set to
a COLORANT SET SPECIFICATION is system dependent, no
fallback is required.
The Document Start Message Document Production Instruction
specifies a Printable String which is to be displayed on the
operator interface (if any) and acknowledged before the document
is printed, as close to the time of printing as possible.
The Document Start Message Document Production Instruction
shall be represented by a DOCUMENT START MESSAGE DPI
structure element.
A DOCUMENT START MESSAGE DPI structure element
shall be a base structure element. The value of
a DOCUMENT START MESSAGE DPI structure element shall

Instruction shall be that the Printable String which is the
value of the DOCUMENT START MESSAGE DPI shall be
displayed on the operator interface (if any) and acknowledged
before the document is printed, as close to the time of printing
as possible.
Document Start Message Document Production Instructions are
meaningful only in a DOCUMENT or in
Supplementary DPI. If a Document Start Message
Document Production Instruction occurs as a
Supplementary DPI, the Supplementary DPI
shall take precedence over the Document DPI.
Systems which cannot display a Document Start Message shall
indicate failure to do so by generating a structure warning.
Printers may print one or more special page called "auxiliary
pages" to identify a document or a set of pages. There are three
types of auxiliary pages:
The start page usually contains a distinctive graphic design
to enable rapid recognition of document boundaries, and
identifies the print job, the document, and the print job
recipient. It may also give the document name, creation date,
printing date, recipient name, and messages describing errors,
etc.. Information printed on the start page may also be supplied
by external sources.
Separator pages are usually unprinted, but are commonly of a
distinctive color (slip pages). The set of pages which
constitutes a page set depends on how the document is being
printed:
The end page may also contain a distinctive graphic design or
be of a distinctive color, and may contain messages describing
errors, etc. which may not be available at the time at which the
start page is generated.
The format and contents of auxiliary pages are system
dependent. The Auxiliary Page Type Document Production
Instruction provides control over the characteristics of the
auxiliary pages desired.
The Auxiliary Page Type Document Production Instruction shall
be represented by a AUXILIARY PAGE TYPE DPI structure
element. An AUXILIARY PAGE TYPE DPI structure element
shall be a composite structure element which shall have the
following immediate subordinates:

Document Comment Document Production Instruction. Systems which
cannot print the entire Printable String on the break page shall
print as much of the Printable String as possible.
The Timeout Document Production Instruction specifies the
maximum time which will be allowed for the actual interpretation
and presentation of the document.
The Timeout Document Production Instruction shall be
