Is there any way of accessing the archives other than listserv? Here is an example of what I find so wasteful of time in dealing with listserv: I just sent out a message to listserv asking for a list of files. I was returned a large file which said it was in punch format and directed me to another file in order to get this file decrupted. I send the message, and was returned another huge file which tried to tell me all the things about listserv I never wanted to know! listserv is perhaps a good way of accessing stuff for people who have only email, but extremely painful to use once you have got used to services like ftp. So in short is there any way life could be made a little easier? ========================================================================= Date: Fri, 10 Apr 1992 09:36:39 -0400 Reply-To: J_CERNY@UNHH.UNH.EDU Sender: "TEI-L: Text Encoding Initiative public discussion list" From: J_CERNY@UNHH.UNH.EDU Subject: a pet peeve ... uncontrolled auto-answer programs. Hello. I regret that what is probably my first posting to TEI-L is on a non-substantive issue. That issue is the use of auto-answer programs by list subscribers when the programs can't distinguish a list from other e-mail. A small percentage of people are enchanted with these programs and the trigger for this message is the recent auto-answer to TEI-L by Liam Quin on 9-APR-1992. I have no idea who Liam Quin is. Probably a fine human being. But what makes his message extra egregious is the statement in it that indicates he is well aware that it will bombard lists -- probably multiple lists: >>If this appears on any mailing lists, please accept my apologies, but >>DO NOT MAIL ME TO TELL ME or you will generate even more mail! Mail to And in addition he says: >>You shouldn't see this message more than once a week or so. Usu. I just quietly send a message to all the addresses referred to in such messages, asking them to desist until such time as they have an auto-answer program that can distinguish lists. The more enchanted and sophisticated recipients of my messages will then tell me that it is really the fault of LISTSERV software because it is not fully compliant with mail standards, etc., etc. To which my predicatable reaction is, baloney! I have come to the conclusion that the best way to effect some behavior modification is to exercise moral suasion in the form of having as many unintended recipients as possible EACH ask them to desist. So, I encourage you, when such messages impinge on us, to exercise a little extra effort and to ask the sender (and any named associates) to desist. I hestitate to extend this tangential discussion but do so as a former offending user of a "vacation" program who has found a way to be more gracious in using it while participating in LISTSERV communities. For those who receive their EMail on UNIX systems, there is a program called "procmail", written by Stephen R. van den Berg at RWTH-Aachen, Germany, which allows one to write an if-then rule base for handling incoming messages. Among other useful things, it's easy to keep TEI-L messages from passing through "vacation". Contact van den berg for information about obtaining procmail (berg@messua.informatik.rwth-aachen.de) or I'll try to help. This issue is *not* 'non-substantive'. Since many of the list-members are probably not well versed in the e-mail techniques, I would like to share the (little) knowledge I have with them. The present list is unmoderated; this means that everything you send off to the list will arrive to everyone's mail-box, automatically. When you go on vacation you do not want urgent e-mail to wait for your return. So you activate the 'I am on vacation til ..' automatic response, that is sent to every e-mail originator. Now then, how do you reconcile each of these automatic responses that are in conflict? Simple: first you send the LISTSERV (NOT the tei-l list) a message like 'set nomail' (this will stop the listserv from sending you any e-mail -- so there will be nothing to respond to) and ONLY THEN you activate the 'I am on vacation til ..' automatic response. Hope this helps the unknowledgeable, apologies to others ==michel eytan@dpt-info.u-strasbg.fr ========================================================================= Date: Tue, 14 Apr 1992 10:28:57 MSZ Reply-To: koehler Sender: "TEI-L: Text Encoding Initiative public discussion list" From: koehler Subject: Re: I am away In-Reply-To: <9204092313.AA08338@mcsun.EU.net>; from "Derick Wood" at Apr 9, 92 7:09 pm > > and will be back on april 16, 1992---please be patient. derick > ok, derick, have a good time. You may recall that we announced a month or so ago that P2 would be distributed for comment as a series of fascicles or part-issues, each containing a complete chapter of P2, as and when the texts were available. (File TEIJ7, "Obtaining the Second Version of the TEI Guidelines," has the details, if you have forgotten). The present fascicle contains chapter 34 of P2, which is almost entirely new material, derived from work done over the last year by the TEI Work Group on Spoken Texts chaired by Stig Johansson. It outlines ways of encoding transcripts of spoken texts for interchange using the TEI scheme, a topic which was not discussed at all in the first release of the TEI Guidelines. We expect shortly to announce availability of a number of other fascicles. Thank you for your patience! Texts of P2 are being made available in a number of different electronic formats. These include plain screen-readable text (filetype DOC), LaTeX (filetype TEX), PostScript (filetype PS) and of course SGML (filetypes P2X and REF). To get electronic copies of this fascicle from the TEI-L fileserver, all you need do is send an ordinary email note to the address LISTSERV@UICVM (or listserv@uicvm.uic.ed) containing the line GET P234 xxx (where xxx is one of the filetypes mentioned above) The documents you request will be returned to you automatically as e-mail messages. Beware! some of the files are quite large, and so may be delayed! You will also receive an automatic notification that the file is on its way to you. (If you receive something illegible in a 'Listserv packed format', please contact one of the editors directly to see about getting you the file in a more useful form.) The same files are available via anonymous FTP from the SGML Project at the University of Exeter. To access these files, your computer system must be on the InterNet. If it is, you should be able to give the command FTP sgml1.ex.ac.uk [ or FTP 144.173.6.61] When you are connected to the Exeter SGMLbox, type the following commands: cd tei\p2\drafts get p234.xxx (where xxx is the filetype as mentioned above; note however that the filename *must* be given in all lower-case letters) For more details on these and other sources of TEI information, please order copies of files EDJ8 MEMO (describes how to retrieve electronic copies of TEI P2 and the various formats in which they are available) EDJ9 MEMO (describes how to request paper copies of TEI P2, for those without electronic mail access) (on the Exeter file server, these may be edj8.doc and edj9.doc) Michael Sperberg-McQueen Lou Burnard St Georges Day 1992 ========================================================================= Date: Thu, 23 Apr 1992 15:47:40 CDT Reply-To: "C. Prof. Tutiya's address is: tutiya@culle.l.chiba-u.ac.jp or by regular post: Syun Tutiya Department of Philosophy Faculty of Letters Chiba University 1-33 Yayoi-cho Chiba 260 JAPAN The TEI Japan Committee is also interested in formulating a common set of comments from Asian points of view; those interested in having input to this process should contact Prof. Tutiya. (Comments from Asia are not required, however, to be addressed to the TEI Japan Committee.) Readers in Germany may find it more convenient to acquire fascicles through the services of the Arbeitskreis TEI-Guideline-Anpassung of the German Society for Linguistic Data Processing (GLDV) (an independent organization with the goal of stimulating German discussion of the TEI Guidelines and ensuring that they meet the needs of German researchers). Contact Peter Scherber (pscherb@dgogwdg1) or Guenter Koch in Goettingen. It's nice to see the TEI getting some publicity in the larger scholarly world, even if this presentation has a very peculiar point of view: it represents the TEI as a conspiracy of Americans and book publishers united against the freedom of expression of British authors. When it sticks to the actual program of the TEI and doesn't wander into extravagant invention, though, it grants that the whole thing is in fact a fairly good idea. Although sent to me individually, I think it may be of interest to readers of this list (as, indeed, to all friends of freedom of thought) and so take the liberty of posting it here. -CMSMcQ ----- An acquaintance of mine, Mr Ano Nym, knowing of my association with the Text Encoding Initiative, sent me this note. I am passing it on for perusal to the TEI editors. Dear Sir, I must commend the correspondent who drew attention to the dangerous implications of the Text Encoding Initiative, the current effort to formulate guidelines for the encoding and interchange of computer-readable texts (Commentary, TLS, 17 April). As a long-time enemy of style manuals and other efforts to restrict the free expression of thought, I welcome this frank and courageous stand. The reaction is long over-due. Consider, for example, books. Every time I open a book, what do I find? It has a title page giving such insignificant details as the name of the author and the publisher. Surely it is the thoughts that count? And the title page is always at the beginning. Are there really any good reasons for this, apart from mere convention? Examples can be multiplied. The index, if there is one, is always at the back. Pages are numbered. Surely it would be much more conducive to creative thought to let readers discover the order themselves? Furthermore, why are the notes always placed at the bottom of the page or inconspicuously after the body of the text - and in smaller type at that! The notes in my writings contain some of my most precious thoughts. Why then should I not be allowed to put them at the top of the page? I believe there has been a long-standing conspiracy among book producers to suppress the free expression of thought. The new development is even more sinister, invoking as it does the powers of the computer. We must oppose tyranny wherever it rears its ugly head. Let us hear no more of these Text Enforcement Ideas. Let there be freedom, though lead it to confusion!
